In lower light the True Zoom images are again on a similar level to built-in smartphone cameras. Image detail starts suffering as you go up the ISO scale and both luminance and chroma noise are becoming more noticeable.

Partly this is caused by the comparatively slower apertures of the lens, especially at the longer end of the zoom range. Thanks to the efficient OIS camera shake is hardly an issue, even at longer focal lengths, but in Auto mode slow shutter speeds in low light can lead to motion blur on moving subjects.

The Xenon flash is another big advantage of the True Zoom module.

When it’s not needed, it is swiftly removed and stored away. It feels nice in the hand and the controls work well. The zoom range is very useful and offers a big advantage over the fixed wide-angle lenses in smartphone cameras.

Those looking for premium-compact or even DSLR-like image quality will be disappointed, though. Looking at the True Zoom’s sensor specification, it is no surprise that pixel-level detail and dynamic range are on very similar levels to built-in smartphone cameras.

That said, the Lenovo Moto Z models are attractive devices in their own right and make a nice package with the module. I enjoyed using the True Zoom on a recent short vacation and, as a photographer, I really hope the module will be an economic success for Lenovo and its subdivision Motorola.

This would mean that we’d be likely to see more models in this series.

It’s not that bad. It certainly has many issues: slow focus, runs hot sometimes on my 32G Moto Z, sometimes even freezes the phone for a few seconds.

The phone would just serve as a screen. Just came back from a trip to Salve Regina University RI, one of my daughters just started her first year.

The concept isn’t as bad as everyone says it is. It’s great as a “bring along attachment” since I have the phone. Even at night with no flash it makes some decent images.

Yeah, I know Hassy needs to expand beyond their shrinking medium format market, but their marketing strategy seems rudderless.

Just take a look at what Samsung is doing and expect about the same from Motorola. There is not telling this camera will be compatible with next year’s flasgship devices from Motorola, specially if Motorola changes hands once more.

That said, a compact camera is not only a much better investment in terms of time, but it might even yield better pictures. It’s all about zoom and Xenon.

There are some much better phone cameras out there like in the Nexus 5X or Samsung Galaxy phones It can’t be that joke of NFC, Wifi or whatever.

Far to complex. The experience must be truely seamless, kind of what the camera app feels on the applewatch with better performance, of course.

Combining Blutooth and the Wifi transmitters in a zero-config way should provide just that.

Now I’m actually starting to like this whole concept – if nothing else it is very educational. I have no knowledge of the current compact camera market, but i’d imagine there are cameras available that can very easily send photos to your phone via blutooth or whatever so you can can easily upload to Facebook etc There should be a better way software to connect the regular camera to the phone.

It doesn’t matter how long you leave it connected for. The solution is to charge the battery externally, with special equipment, which doesn’t help many.

You can send it to a number of people, including myself I’m I’m Australia thoughand they can do this for you. Best bet is not to leave the phone sitting in a flat state at any point.

For the guy who mentioned FTM, that’s a firmware upload mode. Either one of the volume buttons are stuck, or the device has corrupt firmware, which is normally associated with going flat during an update or something like that.

Unplug battery and then plug charger in with battery disconnected. Screen will power on, then show battery icon. Plug battery back in while the charger is plugged in and allow the charge for awhile.

Should be fixed!

I had the same issue. All you have to do is hold the power down for like 1or 2 min. Then the phone will power up.
